A Weekend In Gold Country, California
Old Town Auburn
Although most Gold Rush towns in California disappeared over time, the ones that remain today are quite interesting to visit as much of the Old West ambiance has been retained.
So, in partnership with Visit California, Zory and I decided to visit some Gold Rush towns near our home in San Francisco. Auburn, located in Placer County, is a quick 2-hour drive from San Francisco. Grass Valley and Nevada City, located in Nevada County, are about 30 minutes further up the highway.
California is slowly reopening, so we were extra careful to travel responsibly by checking the local health regulations and making sure to physically distance to minimize health risks. This is part of the California Responsible Travel Code that we all should try to abide by to help keep everyone safe. It took some extra work to do the responsible thing, but it was totally worth it.

Things to do
Foresthill Bridge
Lake Clementine Hike - Located on the North Fork American River, this is a great hike that mixes a blend of uphill and downhill trails, views of the river, and a nice reward at the end where you can see a waterfall from the North Fork Dam. You’ll also cross under the Foresthill Bridge, which is the tallest bridge in North America!
Martin Mattox - Situated in Downtown Auburn next to a nice collection of shops, Martin Mattox is the kind of shop you’d see in the heart of the Mission or Pacific Heights in San Francisco. It’s full of tastefully curated merchandise and is run by a couple who spent some time in San Francisco, but moved back home to run Martin Mattox.
Too Much Stuff Quality Second Hand Treasures - If you like vintage stores with good prices and a great selection, you’ll want to swing by this store. We ended up getting a beautiful Persian-style rug for only $75! I almost got some vintage kitchen goods, but couldn’t fit any more things in the car! Maybe next time!
Historic Auburn Courthouse - Drop by this majestic courthouse to admire the historical architecture and snap a few photos. The first floor also houses a small museum dedicated to the rich history of the area.
Where To Eat
Auburn Bodega - One of the best finds in Auburn, this grocery has an unassuming deli where you’ll find fantastic sandwiches, juices, and smoothies - all made in-house. We had the Tuna Melt and the Nutty Nana - which were so good that we went back the next day for seconds!
High Hand Nursery and Cafe - On the way to Auburn, make sure to stop at High Hand Nursery and Cafe for a bite to eat! The cafe is set inside a lush nursery and the food is sourced from local farms. Afterward, check out their locally made olive oils - they’re delicious!
Pour Choice - A great place for breakfast, this cafe serves fantastic pour-over coffee and delicious avocado toast. They have ample indoor/outdoor seating and are located in the adorable Old Town Auburn area.
Baker & The Cake Maker - This is one of the best places in town for freshly baked bread, delicious pastries, and wonderful ambiance.
Auburn Alehouse - If you’re looking for a place to kick back and have a good time, the Auburn Alehouse offers a great selection of beer and cocktails to pair with a delicious menu of bar-inspired fare.
Where To Stay
Park Victorian - Ever wanted to stay in a lavishly restored Victorian mansion? The Park Victorian is located on a hill overlooking old town Auburn and is surrounded by a well-kept garden. The rooms are well-appointed, comfy, and stylish. I loved the roomy common areas that made me felt like I was visiting a good friend!
Nevada County
Things to do
Buttermilk Bend Trail - One of the most idyllic trails I’ve hiked on - just imagine walking on a trail full of poppies while a gentle river flows next to you. I wish I had more time on this trail and will definitely be back!
Broad Street, Nevada City - Explore Broad Street and downtown Nevada City, which is full of interesting shops, book stores, and cafes. The whole area evokes a lost Gold Rush era feel! If you like bookstores, make sure to check out Harmony Books.
Main Street, Grass Valley - Do a little shopping and perusing of the book stores, art galleries, clothing boutiques, and outdoor restaurants on Main Street.
Hex, Grass Valley - If you love anything related to plants, this shop is for you! It’s filled with all sorts of greenery, beautiful plant stands, essential oils, and interesting souvenirs to take home.
Where To Eat
Golden Saloon Restaurant, Grass Valley - Located inside the Holbrooke Hotel, the restaurant focuses on seasonal California & Mexican-inspired dishes. It was quite possibly one of my favorite meals of the whole trip. Highlights included the Smoked Chicken Breast, Crispy Yukon Gnocchi, and Smoked Chicken Wings.
Fable Coffee, Grass Valley - We were surprised to find pour-over coffee as good as the ones in San Francisco! They have a great selection of light roast beans to pick from as well as nice pastries. Bottom line, if you’re a coffee snob - Fable Coffee has you covered.
Three Forks Bakery, Nevada City - With a wood-fired oven and plenty of excellent beers on tap, you really can’t go wrong with one of their pizzas and an award-winning ale. There’s plenty of outdoor seating too!
Treats, Nevada City - Situated in one of the most picturesque buildings in the area, stop by for some fantastic ice cream and gelato. We loved the Lemon Custard and Jasmine flavors.
Where To Stay
Holbrooke Hotel - Recently renovated with many modern touches, the historic Holbrooke Hotel boasts one of the best restaurants in town, a stunning saloon, and a fantastic location. Some famous guests that have stayed here include Ulysses S Grant and Mark Twain. I especially liked the vintage bathtub and exposed brick walls in the rooms.
